A lot of women tell me they know they should have a routine — they just don't know what order things go in, or which steps actually matter. So let's make this as simple as possible. No 10-step routines, no confusing jargon. Just what to do, morning and night, and why.
Morning: protect and brighten
1. Cleanse. Nothing fancy needed here — whatever cleanser feels good on your skin is fine for the morning. This step is just about starting fresh, not deep cleaning. We recommend Face Forward Hydrating Cleanser
2. Brightening treatment. This is where you're actively working on dark spots and uneven tone, every single day. Ingredients like kojic acid and alpha arbutin work gradually and consistently — this is a "keep showing up" step, not a one-time fix. We recommend Face Forward's Brightening Pads
3. Vitamin C serum. An antioxidant that helps brighten and protect your skin from environmental stress throughout the day. Apply after your treatment step, before moisturizer. We love and recommend Face Forward's Hydrating CE + Peptides because it is multifunctional, prevents, hydrates, and softens fine lines.
4. Moisturizer. Locks everything in and supports your skin barrier for the day ahead. Pro Tip: If you don't have really dry skin, this step may be skipped if you feel like you have enough hydration. Face Forward's Restore is our recommendation for hydration and barrier repair but only if you feel like your skin needs this additional step.
5. SPF. Non-negotiable. This is the step that protects every bit of progress you're making with the steps above it. Skipping it is like treating dark spots with one hand while creating new ones with the other. Our recommendations are the Face Forward SPF Collection. They are so much more than a SPF. They hydrate, prevent, and protect the skin. Our tinted versions are Sheer SPF (acne/oily) and Physical Tint SPF (normal/dry/mature) or non tinted version is Hydrating SPF, which includes hydrating superstar, hyaluronic acid.
Evening: repair and renew
1. Double cleanse. Start with an oil cleanser to break down sunscreen, makeup, and the day in general. Follow with a hydrating cleanser. This two-step approach gets you properly clean without stripping your skin. Our favorite duo is Face Forward's Cleansing Oil and Hydrating Cleanser
2. Exfoliating treatment (a few nights a week). This is where gentle acids go to work on texture and tone while you sleep. If your skin is more resilient, you can build up to nightly but always listen to your skin. If you're more sensitive, once or twice a week will do the trick. We recommend Face Forward's Micropeel Pads
3. Retinol (on nights you're not exfoliating). Retinol and exfoliating acids generally shouldn't be used on the same night — alternate between them so your skin isn't overloaded. You always begin retinol slowly and watch for signs of irritation. We recommend Hydrinity's Retaxome for sensitive/dry/normal skin types and Face Forward's Retinol CE 5% or 1% for normal to oily skin.
4. Restore moisturizer. A richer, barrier-repairing moisturizer that pairs well with retinol nights, helping offset any dryness while your skin does its overnight renewal work. Face Forward's Restore was formulated with ceramides and calming ingredients to hydrate the skin while adding exfoliating acids and retinol to your routine.
A note on patience
None of this is an overnight fix, and I'd be doing you a disservice if I told you otherwise. Most people need 6 to 12 weeks of consistent use before they can really judge whether a brightening or anti-aging routine is working. That's not a flaw in the products — that's just how skin renewal actually works.
The goal isn't to do everything. It's to do these few things, in this order, consistently — and let time do the rest. Reach out if you have any questions about building your routine. We're here and we love to help!
