MEDICAL GRADE VS OVER-THE-COUNTER SKINCARE PRODUCTS

“You get what you pay for.” We’ve all heard that saying, right?  When it comes to skin care, this couldn’t be more true! This post will help you stop wasting money on products that just don’t work for you and help you get your hands on medical grade skincare products that will finally deliver results!

Why medical grade vs over-the-counter skincare products?

Over-the-Counter (OTC) products are the ones you buy from Walgreens, Walmart, Ulta, etc. versus medical grade skin care which includes products you can only buy from a skincare professional.

Key differences between the two:

  1. Over-the-Counter products are manufactured to be used by the general population. This means they contain a very low concentration of active ingredients, making them much less likely to cause skin irritation for the average person. The active ingredient is essentially the most important ingredient in a product. It’s the ingredient that actually targets the concern. (Think wrinkles, acne, skin tone, etc.) Since over-the-counter products are very low in active ingredients, they contain added fillers and preservatives. On the other hand, medical grade skin care contains a much higher concentration of an active ingredient, in its purest form.
  2. Medical grade skin care has to be backed by scientific research to prove that it can actually do what it says. OTC products don’t have to be proven effective. Since you’re spending money on your skin care, you might as well get the most bang for your buck!
  3. OTC products might do the job if you’re simply looking to treat dry or oily skin. But if  you’re looking to treat skin conditions like acne, wrinkles, scars, pigmentation, etc., you’ll need medical grade skin care. Medical grade products are made of small product molecules which can penetrate your skin, actually changing the skin’s biological structure. OTC products are made of large product molecules so they only sit on the surface of your skin, which you’ll eventually shed anyway.
  4. Medical grade skincare products are distributed by licensed professionals who assess your skin’s needs before advising you about exactly which products are right for you. Doesn’t that sound so much better than self-diagnosing your skin in the beauty aisle at Walmart?
