DOUBLE CLEANSING AND WHY YOU SHOULD TRY IT

What is double cleansing? Well, it’s pretty much what it sounds like. Double cleansing is simply washing your face twice. The best way to double cleanse is by first using an oil-based cleanser, and then using a water-based cleanser.

Why double cleanse?

Double cleansing is the perfect way to make sure you’re not going to sleep with the effects of the day lingering on your face. The first step--the oil-based cleanser--is intended to take off that first layer of grime, whether it’s your makeup, sunscreen, sweat, or dirt accumulation. Even if you don’t wear makeup every day, double cleansing is still for you! It’s important to understand that the first cleanse only removes the first layer of dust and dirt, and it’s not enough to deep clean your face. This is why the second cleanse is so important. It’s the step that actually washes out your pores, leaving your skin squeaky-clean.

The Double Cleanse Method

You might be thinking, “Don’t I wash my face to remove dirt and oil? Why would I wash my face with oil?” Now, I can see why you would be skeptical, but let me explain why cleansing your face with oil makes so much sense! An oil-based cleanser can also be described as a solvent. You might remember your science teachers describing solvents as “like dissolves like.” This means to be able to dissolve oil, you would need to use another oil.

Unlike other cleansers, oil-based cleansers are applied to dry skin. The first step in the double cleansing process is massaging the cleanser onto your dry face. While you massage your skin with the cleanser, the oil is what breaks down makeup (which is oil-based) and dissolves unwanted oil from your skin (remember you need oil to dissolve oil). As you rinse your face with water, you’ll be washing away all the dissolved makeup and grime, leaving your face feeling smooth. I love the Mara Algae Enzyme Cleansing Oil which leaves your skin feeling hydrated and clean!

After rinsing off the oil-based cleanser, you’ll follow up with a water-based one to unclog pores and remove acne causing bacteria. A few of my favorite water-based cleansers are Obagi Nu-Derm Foaming Gel, Revision Skincare Papaya Enzyme Cleanser, and for acne-prone skin, I recommend Obagi CLENZIderm M.D. Daily Care Foaming Cleanser

Even more benefits!

Since double cleansing seriously clears out your pores, it makes every moisturizer or serum that follows your cleanse that much more effective! Using just one more cleanser at night will only take you a few extra seconds, and the results are so worth it.
